Why do detective stories work so well?

The detective story as we know it emerged in the mid-19th century, when growing cities needed modern police forces. Writers transformed crime into an intellectual puzzle where careful observation and logical reasoning matter more than action.

Detectives are fascinating heroes because they show us how they think. As readers, we follow the clues, make our own guesses, and try to solve the mystery before they do.

Sherlock Holmes and beyond

Sherlock Holmes remains the world's most famous detective, inspiring countless films, television series, and animated adaptations.

Younger readers may also enjoy the adventures of Tintin, the curious Belgian reporter who finds himself solving mysteries around the world.

Our current favourite

One of our favourite resources is the illustrated adaptation of Sherlock Holmes by Alex Woolf.

The stories are divided into six short chapters, making them perfect for English learners. They stay remarkably faithful to Conan Doyle's originals while using accessible language and engaging illustrations. Students finish a book quickly, gain confidence, and usually can't wait to start the next one.
